Dalkey parish Outreach project was a Parish council initiative in 1999 to mark the millennium by supporting education and development in developing countries. The principal fundraising activity is a monthly coffee morning, held with the welcome support of the parish in Our Lady’s Hall. Until June ’09 all donations received were divided equally between Teresina, Brazil and Kitui Kenya. Since Sept 09 however, we have been sending the total proceeds of the coffee morning to Kitui mainly because of the huge needs of the people in this arid area of Kenya.
In 2005 Friends of Kitui evolved from Dalkey Outreach to link the activities of other Dublin parishes notably Cabinteely and Rathgar, now all working towards the similar goals of education and development for some of the poorest people on earth.
Projects in kitui are monitored by friends of Kitui volunteers at their own cost, so that 100% of all money donated goes to the projects. While our funds are mainly channelled via Trócaire to the Catholic Diocese of Kitiu we insist that beneficiaries should be selected on the basis of need, irrespective of religious persuasion.
The monthly coffee morning has been a catalyst which has led directly to the provision of clean water for thousands of very poor people. Dozens of orphaned children have received an education who would otherwise have had no chance. Three students now study at 3rd level as a result of Dalkey intervention and a community of women has been helped to provide for their families through income generation projects.
You can support this worthwhile work by calling in to Our Lady’s Hall for a cuppa at the monthly coffee morning or simply drop in a make a donation. For more information visit www.friendsofkitui.com, of see the Parish newsletter.
